A visit to the first established Deaf school

How better to see Deaf education in Holland than with a visit to the first established Deaf school Kentalis Guyotschool voor VSO? Luckily for us the school had their ‘open day’ for parents and future students; and we were invited too!

With an extensive tour by an enthusiastic Deaf employee, supplemented with explanations from students, the group gained many insights in this secondary school.
In the afternoon the delegation enjoyed a city tour by Deaf tour guide Adde. We drank coffee and tea in coffee shop Luhu, which is run by Deaf.

Adde also showed us the original historical buildings of the Guyotschool, where he once was a student himself. He stressed the importance of the ability for Deaf to use Sign Language, which until 1980 still was forbidden! What a huge contrast when in 2021 the Dutch Sign Language was officially recognized by the Dutch government.
