About Sign Language, bimodal education and Deaf identity

Besides the secondary Kentalis Guyotschool in Groningen, the Exchange participants also visited the primary Auris Dr. M. Polanoschool in Rotterdam. One of the Dutch Deaf teachers is Lilly De Carpentier- Tashman, who was born and raised in Jordan, before she came to Holland. She taught a special lesson in English using American Sign Language (ASL), together with a hearing teacher.

The school prepared an extensive program with information about Sign Language, bimodal/bilingual education and Deaf identity. The presentation about inclusivity in the education system was a very important and valued topic. This is exactly what the group needs: ideas supported with practical examples. And we still have two other schools to visit.
